Key & Superior References
[edit]These are historians who laboriously compiled massive historical documentation, and did so within a few decades of the war, including interviews of still-living veterans, combined with reviews of official records and other resources. Generally these references are superior to all other war histories. Most newer authors are forced to use and cite their work, and merely add some scant new materials here and there (often opinions and candy-language adding nothing of historical value). Here are the Superior References:
- Early, LtGen Jubal A. Autobiographical Sketch and Narrative of the War Between the States. With Notes by R.H. Early. Philadelphia: J.P. Lippincott Company, 1912.
- Evans, Clement A., Confederate Military History, Confederate Publishing Company, 1899, Atlanta, Ga., facsimile reprint by The National Historical Society, 2008.
- Henderson, G.F.R., Stonewall Jackson and the American Civil War. New York, Van Rees Press; Longmans, Green and Co., 1898, Reprinted 1955.
- Shriver, Ernest, Stealing Railroad Engines, from Tales from McClure's War: Being True Stories of Camp and Battlefield, New York, Doubleday & McClure Co., 1898.
- Scharf, J. Thomas. History of the Confederate States Navy: From its Organization to the Surrender of its Last Vessel. New York: Rogers and Sherwood, 1887; repr. The Fairfax Press, 1977.
