I am recently retired after founding and running a charity for twenty years; however, the central part of my life was as an archivist of C19th and C20th MSS, and as a rare book librarian, in England and the USA. My doctoral dissertation was on analysing conflicting ideas, in a wide range of polemical English scientific and religious writings of the mid-seventeenth-century, about different ways of making language "truthful" (in one sense or another of the word!); and I have kept up those studies as well as those relating to modern MSS collections.
