Instructions on how to promote Featured topics and Good topics.

Bot assisted promotion

[edit]

This is the recommended method for promoting brand new topics. You must be on the allow list in order to use the bot. The bot's maintainer is User:Novem Linguae.

1. Add ~~~~ to the bottom of the nomination page. The bot will be along within an hour to make the promotion.

After the bot makes its edits...

2. Add to the appropriate section of either Wikipedia:Featured topics or Wikipedia:Good topics (example: [1])
3. If there are any articles in this topic that are also in a different topic, manually adjust the counts at either Wikipedia:Featured topics/count or Wikipedia:Good topics/count.
4. Read over the description paragraph located above the featured topic box on the Wikipedia:Featured Topic/[topic name] page. Edit it for tone. Remove stuff like this.
5. Spot check some of the bot's edits. Report any sub-optimal behaviors on GitHub or at User talk:Novem Linguae.

Manual promotion

[edit]

This is the recommended method for promotions the bot can't handle, such as adding articles to an existing topic.

1. Close the nomination; *Closed with a consensus to promote to Good Topic – ~~~~
2. Copy and paste the featured topic box and topic description into a new page entitled Wikipedia:Featured topics/NAME OF TOPIC
2a. Add or un-comment the <noinclude> tags around the description.
3. Create a talk page for the new featured topic page
3a. Add the Template:Featuredtopictalk:

3b. The projects from the lead article of the topic:

4. Go to the talk page of each article in the set
4a.
Remove the FTC/GTC nomination template, if present
4b.
Add the following to article history (only add "ftmain = yes to the main article of the topic):
|action4 = GTC OR FTC
|action4date = DATE AND TIME THAT STEP 1 WAS COMPLETED (the same as 3a's time; format example: 21:38, 5 January 2021)
|action4link = Wikipedia:Featured and good topic candidates/NAME OF THE TOPIC/archive1
|action4result = promoted
|ftname = NAME OF THE TOPIC
|ftmain = NO (YES FOR THE MAIN ARTICLE)

All of the above should be placed below the "currentstatus" line:
|currentstatus=Keep this how it is
}}
5. Update the count at either Wikipedia:Featured topics/count or Wikipedia:Good topics/count (example: [2])
5a. For both good and featured, update the count at Template:Featured topic log
6. Add to the appropriate section of either Wikipedia:Featured topics or Wikipedia:Good topics (example: [3])
7. Depending on the content, create either or both of the below categories, with initial text . (examples: [4] [5])
7a. Category:Wikipedia featured topics NAME OF TOPIC good content for good content
7b. Category:Wikipedia featured topics NAME OF TOPIC featured content for featured content
8. Create Category:Wikipedia featured topics NAME OF TOPIC with initial text .
9. Add to Wikipedia:Featured and good topic candidates/Good log/January 2021 or Wikipedia:Featured and good topic candidates/Featured log/January 2021
10. IF A FEATURED TOPIC add to Template:Announcements/New featured content and Wikipedia:Goings-on
