The Parachute Company of the 3rd Foreign Infantry Regiment (French: Compagnie Parachutiste du 3eREI, CP/3eREI) was the first parachute unit of the French Foreign Legion that existed for a year during the French Indochina War.[1]
History
[edit]The company was established on April 1, 1948 at Hanoi using men from 2e REI, 3e REI and 13e DBLE.[1] It was commanded by Lt. Morin from the II/3eREI and was attached to the 3rd Battalion of the 1st Chasseur Parachute Regiment (French: 1er Régiment de Chasseurs Parachutistes, III/1erRCP)[1][2]
Its first operation was at Van Xa on April 26th and its first firefight at Aymo Tong on May 5th. The Company operated all over northern Tonkin over the next year, including on RC3 and RC4, and around Cao Bang, Lang Son and other outposts.[1] It was disbanded on May 31st, 1949 with its men - three officers, fourteen NCOs and ninety-two legionnaires[2] - being transferred to 1er BEP.[3]
