About Me

[edit]

In my free time I enjoy doing many different activities. From weight training to accounting to bow hunting to singing, my interests vary greatly. Having a multipotentiality character, means that you try new things often and are very adventurous in recreation activities. [1] Connected to my love of singing is my ability to play guitar and ukulele, which I often do as a part of my church's worship team.

My Wikipedia interests

[edit]

If I use Wikipedia in the future, I intend to help make Wikipedia as reliable as possible. By making necessary edits to articles, researching different topics, and adding information to different Wikipedia pages, I can do my part in helping provide an accurate and accessible encyclopedia that anyone can use.

Additionally, I hope to use Wikipedia in my classes as a guide to find trustworthy sources to use on research papers throughout my Running Start and college career.

Article Evaluation

[edit]

The Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA) is an organization whose goal is to educate high school and college students about business and develop leadership primarily by hosting conferences and competitions throughout the traditional school year. As a DECA member and officer, I want to help others learn about the association and the amazing benefits and life skills that can be learned through being a part of DECA. I visited the DECA (organization) article on Wikipedia and found three aspects of it worth commenting on: reliability of sources, grammatical errors, and lack of important information.

Reliability of Sources

[edit]

Within the Article only two sources are listed, both coming from DECA. This means that there are no secondary or tertiary sources supporting the statements made by the author of the article and DECA. Outside sources can be important, they give a new perspective to the topic. Additionally, secondary sources reenforce what the primary source stated.

Grammatical Errors

[edit]

In an encyclopedia, grammar and formal language are significant as it gives the reader a sense of reliability and whether they can trust the article. Towards the beginning of the first sentence, DECA is stated to be a “not-for profit career and technical student organization.” The phrase “not-for-profit” should be changed to “non-profit.”

Lack of Important Information

[edit]

While the article gives a broad overview of DECA, there is a lot of information missing. First, the article does not give an inside look at the individual chapters and student-based enterprises (school stores) which is a huge part of the High School Division’s program. Secondly, the specific competitive events are not listed and the general information on the competitions leaves a lot of questions about how it is run and how the events play out.

Summary

[edit]

The DECA (organization) article is an accurate, general overview of the association. Improvements that could be made to the Wikipedia page is the addition of secondary and tertiary sources, corrections to grammatical errors, and additional information and details about DECA.
