Victor Yampolsky (1942-present) is a Russion conductor, professor and violinist. He is currently celebrating his 25th year as director of orchestras and professor of conducting at Northwestern University's Bienen School of Music.
Biography
[edit]Yampolsky was born in the Soviet Union. He is the son of the great pianist Vladimir Yampolsky. He studied at the Moscow Conservatory with David Oistrakh and then went on to join the Moscow Philharmonic as a violinist and then assistant conductor. In 1973, Yampolsky emigrated to the United States and was soon offered a position in the Boston Symphony . Later, he was appointed the orchestra's principal second violinist. In 1977, he became the music director of Atlantic Symphony Orchestra in Nova Scotia. Then in 1984, Yampolsky became the Carol F. and Arthur L. Rice Jr. University Professor at Northwestern University and has been there ever since. This position, however, has not limited Conductor Yampolsky's travels. He has conducted and taught over 70 professional and student orchestras throughout the world. He has repeatedly been summoned to orchestras in the United States, Canada, Spain, Portugal, Australia, New Zealand, Russia, South Africa, South Korea, Taiwan and Chile.
