Sufi Thought and Action by Idries Shah was first published in 1990, and re-published by The Idries Shah Foundation in 2017. Sufi Thought and Action is a collection of essays from many countries and cultures that represent a large variety of Sufi ideas and activities. Introduced and arranged by Shah, they include; key concepts in Sufi understanding; ritual, initiation, and secrets in Sufi circles; and principles and learning methods. This book functions as a straightforward and simple guide to many facets of Sufi study and thought. Shah’s introduction expresses it well, “The object of Sufi spiritual teaching can be expressed as: to help to refine the individual’s consciousness so that it may reach the Radiances of Truth, from which one is cut off by ordinary activities of the world”.
Shortly before he died, Shah stated that his books form a complete course that could fulfil the function he had fulfilled while alive. As such, Sufi Thought and Action can be read as part of a whole course of study.[1]
