Earl Horter(1881-1940) was an avid collector of the art of Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque and a renowned modernist artist himself. Horter grew up in Germantown, Pennsylvania where he taught himself the art of drawing. In 1903 he moved to New York where he worked for an advertising agency. While in New York he began taking etching classes where he perfected his skills. Horter then began etching cityscapes for his advertising firm. When these etchings were widely praised, Horter was rewarded with his first exhibit, held at Frederick and Keppel Company Gallery. In 1916 Horter returned to Philadelphia where he began collecting modern art and making a living as a freelance artist. Horter had in his collection over 20 Picasso's, many of which he had to sell during the Great Depression. He was was largely influenced by the cubism movement, led by Picasso and Braque. In 1999 the Philadelphia Art Museum held an exhibit which focussed on Horter's works and collection. The accompanying catalog Mad for Modernism. Earl Horter and His Collection showcases his works and collection.
