From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Alley Shrimp is the name of an internet meme where people take photographs of objects that are out of context, or where they don't belong, and upload them to a variety of online social networks, usually Instagram, Twitter and Flickr. Accompanying the photo is the hashtag #alleyshrimp.

The phenomenon started in April 2010 when a Milwaukee man spotted several shrimp while walking through an alley. He then updated his Twitter account[1] with a photo of the shrimp with the caption "Mmm... Alley [2]... " Since that time, a number of people have joined in the meme, snapping pictures of out of context things and sharing them, usually from their smart phones.

People who participate in the meme are generally called "Alley Shrimpers."

Naming Convention

[edit]

Alley Shrimp are always named within the title of the photo. The name consists of the object's physical location first and its description second. Some Alley Shrimpers get creative with names while adhering to the format; for example, "Street Affection" may be the title of a valentine found in the street.
