Image uploading

[edit]

1. Make sure you can provide the following information:

  • Your source of the image (required, unless the image is "own work")
(this can be an active online source link, or a book title for a scanned image, or any other clearly identifiable source information)
  • Author/creator of the image (required, unless the image is clearly Public Domain or "own work")
  • License permission (f.e. Creative Commons), Public Domain information or "fair use" rationale
(required, a list of suitable license and public domain tags can be found at Wikipedia:File copyright tags, for "fair use" see WP:NFCC).

2. Collect as many additional details as possible, for example:

  • Date of creation
  • Date of first publication (for US copyright)
  • Author's year of death (for most non-US legislations)
  • Permission details from the copyright owner
  • Further background information on the image and its history.
Note: Some of the listed additional details may be required, depending on the actual copyright situation and the image's country of origin.

3. Both upload "wizards", free and non-free, will query information from 1. and 2. in a step by step process.

3a. Uploading free images:

3b. Uploading non-free images ("fair use" for educational purposes):

  • Commons does not accept any "fair use" uploads.
  • Non-free files can be uploaded to English Wikipedia, only when they meet all 10 criteria for "fair use", see WP:NFCC for more details.
  • If the file meets all 10 criteria, including a detailed rationale for its usage, it can be uploaded to English Wikipedia
(use Wikipedia:File_Upload_Wizard upload options in the right column).

4. Use the uploaded image in Wikipedia articles:

  • Media files can be inserted via Visual Editor with the function "Insert" -> "Media".
  • Alternatively using the source editor, images can be inserted adding a tag like [[File:''filename.extension''|thumb|''caption text'']] (without " characters).
