Prof. Jose Duran von Arx (born September 13, 1946) is a spanish orthodontist. He was a Robert M. Ricketts student and coworker of the Carl F. Gugino. Most important contributions where related to his development of Codification of Oral Functions, developpment of special MFS devices for stimulotherapy in oral functions. Also he developped a new oclusogram to calculate anterior, lateral and posterior discrepancies, as well a biodinamics of the oclusogram that help to establish dental movements and correct assimetries. An other contribution is the developpment of individualized torques on the brackets prescription and to use a slot of .018”x.034”.

Life

Jose Duran von Arx, was born into family with a good level. His father, from Barcelona, was a cardiologist and the mother was born in Switzerland. He studied in the Swiss School and began medical studies with age 16. He finished medical studies at the university of Barcelona and studied stomatology during two years. Later he opened his office in Barcelona and began to teach at the University of Barcelona. He married with Helena Verges Teixido and has two children - Maria Elena and Jose Augusto (known as Urco - famous, spanish modern painter).

Orthodontics

Jose Duran von Arx began to develope his MFS (multifunction system) in 1972. He discover that oral disfunctions treatment is basic to prevent the relapse after the orthodontic treatment. He developed a new codified diagnosis of the oral functions and created a new concept in reeducation of functions: stimulotherapy. He created new devices to promote stimulation of oral muscles and automatic exercises during the night with each swallowing. That means that the patient will do more as 3000 exercices during the night. An other concept that Prof. Duran developed is the models analisys with the measurment of the three discrepancies: anterior, lateral (right and left) and posterior (right and left) on the models and on the teleradiography. Simetric position of the cuspids and first molars are studied in his new oclusogram. And biodinamics of the oclusogram is a step forward in the treatment plan strategy. In 1992, after 20 years of work in orthodontics, Prof. Duran understud that is not ideal the use of the same prescription in all our patients. He analized the paralelism of the upper incisors axis and the facial growth axis of Ricketts, at the end of the treatment, and he found that only in a ten per cent of the cases we obtain this paralelism that Ricketts proposed. So, Prof. Duran developped a new system to calculate upper incisors torque as well of cuspids and premolars. He developped new brackets (.018”x.034”) with different torques for each tooth. He understud that he must use an idividualized prescription of the torques on the prescription of each case. He demostrated that we can't use standard brackets prescriptions like Roth, MBT or Damon and that the MFS prescription we obtain better and more stabile results.
