The name Scarborough Subway Extension has been applied to a series of proposals to replace the Toronto Transit Commission's Line 3, with an extension to its conventional heavy rail east-west Bloor-Danforth line.
Line 3 was the first system in the world to use the linear induction technology used in the Bombardier Innovia Metro system. Later systems that used this technology are regarded as successes. But this short (6.4 kilometres (4.0 mi)) line was the only one in Toronto to use this technology. Toronto's line used old rolling stock, while the more modern rolling stock's turning circle was too wide to be navigate two tight curves on the Toronto route. When the rolling stock neared the end of its useful life officials proposed replacing the route with more conventional system.
The Transit City plan, finalized during the administration of Mayor David Miller would have built more than half a dozen light rail routes, the first of which was to be the [[Eglinton Crosstown, which would run along Eglinton, from Weston Road, to Kennedy station, where it would turn north, replacing the original line 3, and adding an additional 3.2 kilometres (2.0 mi), and two additional stations, as it proceeded northeast, under very large Highway 401, terminating at Sheppard Avenue, where it would connect to a new Sheppard East LRT.
