Robert Scott Pierson was a leading figure in the Canadian shipping industry.^[1]^[2] Pierson was a student at Upper Canada College and the University of Western Ontario. Before joining the family shipping firm Misener Transportation Pierson worked as a broker for E. A. Ames. He founded a shipping firm, the Soo River Company, in 1975. He continued to work for Grand River Navigation, and its subsidiary, Lower Lakes Towing.

The year after he died Lower Lakes Towing renamed a recently acquired bulk carrier the Robert S. Pierson after him.^[3]
