Lake Atlanta is the name given to an artificial lake that would be a key component to the most recent plan to build a Nicaragua Canal.[1][2][3][4]
The canal route chosen in 2014 would have ocean-going ships proceed across 8,264 square kilometres (3,191 sq mi) natural Lake Nicaragua.[1] But the water to power the canal's locks would be drawn from a 400 square kilometres (150 sq mi) artificial lake -- Lake Atlanta. The artificial lake would be built in the vicinity of the Punta Gorda River.[5][6]

Dong said the route was selected because it would cause the least amount of environmental disruption and would facilitate the creation of a 400-square-kilometer artificial lake linked to Punta Gorda River, in the Caribbean zone. That would supply the water for the canal without disrupting Lake Nicaragua, which spans more than 8,000 square kilometers, he added.
