Berkeley Street is one of the dozen or so streets in Toronto that was part of the original plan laid out in 1788 for the original townsite of York, Upper Canada.[1] The street was originally named Parliament Street, because Upper Canada's first Parliament buildings were built at on the street, between Front and King.
Upper Canada's legislature was moved, and when it was this street was renamed Berkeley Street, after Berkeley House, the large house built across the street from the original Parliament buildings, by John Small, who was Chief Clerk to Upper Canada's Privy Council for over two decades.
The lower section of Berkeley retains many heritage structures
