Background

[edit]

Site

[edit]

Kayukovo 2 is a Neolithic archaeological site located 55 kilometers south of Pyt-Yakh, in the Nefteyugansky District of the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug. The sites are located 2.5 kilometers south of Bolshoye Kayukovo Lake, adjacent to a series of swamps, bogs and waterways connecting the lake to the Tapatega River, a tributary of the Bolshoy Salym. Currently situated atop a narrow sandy ridge overlooking the swamps, reconstructions of the prehistoric regional environment place the site as seven meters above an adjacent flood plain, then forested with spruce, birch and aspen.[1]

Archaeology

[edit]

The Kayukovo 2 site was discovered by Georgy P. Vizgalov in 1991, as part of archaeological team lead by K. G. Karacharov. Alongside L. V. Ivasko and O. V. Kardash, they surveyed the site in 1998 and 1999, preceding a full excavation by Ivask from 2000 to 2002.[2]
