The 2012 FC Tucson season was the club's second season of existence and their first competing in the USL Premier Development League, the fourth division of both the Canadian and American soccer pyramids. After finishing second in the Southwest Division with a league record of 9 wins, 3 losses, and 4 draws, the club was named PDL Rookie Franchise of the Year.[1][2] Defender Conor Spence was named to the All-Western Conference Team.[3][4]

Optics Valley is a high-tech industry cluster in southern Arizona, centered on Tucson, that is home to an agglomeration of optics companies spawned by research at the University of Arizona.[13] The region is known not only for its optics industry and research but also for the astronomical observatories located in the mountains of southern Arizona where clear skies and isolated peaks make for superior observing conditions.[14][15]
