Construction and design

[edit]

Chase, a 500-ton sidewheel steamer, was built in Williamsburg, New York in 1865 by Thomas Stack. Chase was 170 feet (52 m) in length, with a beam of 28 feet (8.5 m) and draft of 10 feet 8 inches (3.25 m). Her wooden hull was strengthened with diagonal iron bracing. Her powerplant, a 48-inch bore by 9-foot stroke vertical beam steam engine, was built by the Fulton Iron Works of New York. While Chase's speed is not recorded, it was probably similar to that of her sister ship Sherman which achieved a sustained speed of 18 knots in trials.

Chase was armed with a single 30-pounder gun, two 24-pounders and three 4-pounders. She was manned by a crew complement of 40 officers and enlisted men.
