Construction and design
[edit]Cristobal, a steel-hulled passenger-cargo ship, was ordered by the Panama Line, a shipping line established by the United States government in the early 1900s principally to transport goods and personnel of the government-owned Panama Railroad Company between the United States and Panama. Cristobal was built in 1939 at the Quincy, Massachusetts yard of the Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corporation.
