Introduction
[edit]Hi, my name is Jake Garland. I am currently completing my undergraduate degree in Geography (Honours) at the University of Guelph. Throughout my time at the University I have taken my fair share of Geography courses ranging from Human Geography, Environmental Geography onto Physical Geography. I don't necessarily have a preference between the three groupings as a like to learn to become a more knowledgeable and well-rounded individual. This is why I haven't ever resisted my opportunity to gain more insight into other disciplines when taking my elective courses. I have taken Science courses, psychology, sociology, music, on through to philosophy, computer information science, history and math courses. Partly the reason I decided I would give this course a shot and see what I can learn. What can I say it never hurts to at least learn some interesting facts.
Personal Life
[edit]I am from the small town of Brooklin, Ontario, that's spelled B-R-O-O-K-L-I-N. Not Brooklyn, like everyone likes to think how it's spelled thanks to that place near New York City. It is a small town located within the township of Whitby,Ontario. Which is in Durham Region approximately 45 minutes along highway 401 on the eastern side of Toronto.
I have always been an avid sports fan and love to play almost any kind of sport while being outside and active. My favourite team is the San Jose Sharks in the National Hockey League[1] (NHL). They were just recently beaten out of the Stanley Cup Playoffs by the Vancouver Canucks in The Western Conference Finals.
Education and Academic Career
[edit]Present Education
[edit]I attended Sinclair Secondary School in Whitby to complete my high school education in 2006 on the Honours Role. I never quite found high school that appealing to me as I played a lot of hockey in the winters and none of the kids on my hockey team went to my school. They all attended different ones within the Whitby area. I decided to come to the University of Guelph to complete my undergraduate Degree in Geography.
Future Academic Goal
[edit]My academic goal is to eventually graduate and make my way through teachers college and one day teach in the junior to senior grades (grades 4-8) of an elementary school. I am interested in these age groups as I have most of my fondest memories from my own schooling through these grades with all the different subjects I was learning. I have also recently begun completing my GIS Certification through Durham College [2] on a part-time basis when I find spare time from my other school work. I have always liked maps and am finding it awesome to be able to use today's technologies to create maps and diagrams of all sorts.
Hobbies
[edit]In the summer months I can be found doing the following:
- playing sports (outside or in a recreational facility) and my favourite sports in order are:
- Hockey
- Football
- Lacrosse
- Basketball
- Volleyball
- rollerblading around town
- cooking and/or eating (I have been referred to as "The Human Garbage Disposal")
- riding my motorcycle
