Red Ware

The red on cream ceramics found during excavation of Kayatha Culture period sites is recognized as the main identifier for the presence of Kayatha Culture. There are three distinct characteristics to this ware that have been identified as: red on cream, red slipped, and plain red varieties. Red on cream is characterized by the application of a cream colored wash, or slip, which allows for the natural red coloring of the clay to show through. Red paint was then used to create horizontal and vertical slanted geometric designs. The Jali or Jaali motif was also used to decorate the red on cream ware. Red slipped ware has a red slip over the body of the jar or bowl, but contains no decoration. Plain red ware contained no wash or decorations.
