IPPOLIT is a series of extremely strong open source chess engines. The first version was released in October 2009, giving rise to a very fast development of following versions. The last version Firebird is considered to be the strongest chess engine of the world.
Version history
[edit]Up to now the engines were published under the following names, in chronological order:
- IPPOLIT
- RobboLito
- Igorrit - support of multiprocessing added.
- IvanHoe - support of multi-PV and improved time control
- Firebird - further improvement by Kranium and Sentinel
Test results
[edit]The engine is extremely strong and using only one processor core it has beaten multi-core Rybka 3 (the world's best commercial engine) in many tests (though, the test results were controversial).
Rybka controversy
[edit]After its release in October 2009, IPPOLIT was claimed by the Rybka's author Vasik Rajlich to be a clone of his engine[1]. Nevertheless, he did not provide any evidence of cloning. Also, the use of IPPOLIT was prohibited on multiple sites for chessplayers (and on the world`s largest site for chessplayers, Playchess). Even the mention of Ippolit is prohibited on the official Rybka Forum . Thereby, the discussion on IPPOLIT is still going on on numerous chess sites and forums[2][3][4]. Many chess players and programmers have demured Rajlich's statement.
