Links are very important in wikipedia articles. They offer the reader, and us editors, the ability to quickly move to similar articles and to articles on words we don't know, and let us visit other websites concerning the subject of the article we are reading/editing. Links that let us travel to other pages on wikipedia are called Internal links and those that link to websites outside of wikipedia are called External links.
The Basics
[edit]- Links to pages in wikipedia or to other web-pages that exist come up blue. Those links to pages that do not exist come up red.
- There are two types of links, internal and external. Internal links lead to articles in wikipedia, while external links are to other websites.
Internal link
[edit]A internal link is a link to a page within wikipedia.
The mark up for this is [[ Page name ]].
Basic
[edit]Mark up | It gives | Explanation |
---|---|---|
[[Link]] | link | A link to the page titled Link |
[[Link|display text]] | display text | This is a link to the page titled Link, but it shows display text. |
[[Link#section]] | Link#section | This is a link that leads directly to a specific section of the page Link, named section. |
Advanced
[edit]Mark up | It gives | Explanation |
---|---|---|
[[a]] | a | A link to the page titled a |
[[a|b]] | b | A link to the page tiled a, but it shows b |
[[a]]b | ab | Same as above |
[[a|b]]c | bc | Just like [[a|bc]] it gives bc. |
a[[b]] | ab | Only the b is linked |
[[a]]<nowiki>b</nowiki> | ab | Only the a is linked |
[[a]]''b'' | ab | Same as above |
''[[a]]''b | ab | Same as above |
[[a|b]]c<nowiki>d</nowiki> | bcd | Only the b and c are linked but the b is actually a link to a |
[[a]][[b]] | ab | Two links that look the same as the single link ab |
External link
[edit]External links use full URLs to link to other websites.
Mark up | It gives | Explanation |
---|---|---|
http://en.wikipedia.org/ | http://en.wikipedia.org/ | This gives a link to an external website showing the whole address |
[http://en.wikipedia.org/] | [1] | This gives a link without showing the web address |
[http://en.wikipedia.org/ Wikipedia] | Wikipedia | This allows you to customise the name of the link |
Special pages
[edit]To create an link to special pages you can :
- Use an external link (E.g. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Categories )
- Use the format [[:page name]] to make it an internal link (E.g. [[:Special:Categories]] = Special:Categories )
You can name them as you would with other internal/external links:
- [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Categories Special:Categories] = The special page on categories
- [[:Special:Categories| The special page on categories]] = The special page on categories
