Joaquim Jorge holds the UNESCO Chair on Artificial Intelligence and Extended Reality [2] & University Professor in Computer Science Department at Instituto Superior Técnico da Universidade de Lisboa and senior researcher at INESC-ID. He serves as an elected member of the Board of Governors of the IEEE Computer Society since 2023. He is an Adjunct Professor at the Victoria University Wellington (VUW) since 2023 and an Honorary Invited Professor at the Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (2022). He is a Fellow of the Eurographics Association, a Distinguished Member and Distinguished Speaker of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), a Distinguished Visitor, and a Distinguished Visitor and Distinguished Contributor of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), a Membre Libre of the Académie nationale de chirurgie (French National Academy of Surgery). He is the Editor-in-Chief of the Computers and Graphics Journal (Elsevier).
Education
[edit]Joaquim Jorge received his BSEE from Lisbon's Instituto Superior Técnico in 1984. He received his MSc and Ph.D. degrees from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1992 and 1995, respectively. He completed his Agregação (Habilitation) degree from Instituto Superior Técnico in 2002.
Career and research
[edit]Shortly after receiving his Ph.D., Joaquim Jorge joined the newly formed Department of Computer Science and Engineering in Instituto Superior Técnico as an assistant professor. After completing his Habilitation in 2002, he was promoted to the rank of associate professor in 2004, and full professor in 2008. Jorge was a visiting professor at the Technical University of Darmstadt for the academic year 1999-2000, an Adjunct Professor of the University of Calgary's Computer Science Department from 2006-2018, and a visiting professor at the Technical University of Vienna in the academic year 2013-2014. He was an Elected Executive Member of the ACM Europe Council from 2015-2019. He was the Journal Papers Chair for IEEEVR2020, held in April 2020 (virtually)[3], and was conference co-chair of IEEEVR2021[4], held July 9–13, 2021 in Lisbon (Virtually), and IEEEVR2022[5]. He was a member of the Editorial Board of Computer Graphics Forum and currently serves on the Editorial Boards of Springer Virtual Reality and Springer/Nature HCIS Book Series. He is the author of over 300 papers, books, and conference peer-reviewed articles. As of 2023, Jorge has graduated 17 PhD students.[6]
