Shakin' Not Stirred (Michael Daughtry)

Daughtry describes Shakin Not Stirred as his “tribute to Bond, James Bond, British Agent 007, on Her Majesty’s Secret Service. Four different actors played the role of Bond in sixteen films from 1962 to 1994: Sean Connery, Roger Moore, George Lazenby, and Timothy Dalton. But over the years, Bond’s preferred drink has remained the same – a medium dry martini with lemon peel, ‘shaken, not stirred’. Similar to the four actors who have portrayed Bond’s persona over time, four musicians interpret the secret agent motifs through repetition and variation. The suave themes emerge from the groovy electric bass lines, nimble marimba and vibraphone phrases, and the shaking of tambourine and maracas. Auxiliary instruments such as hi-hat, triangle, splash cymbal, crotales, cowbell, woodblock, gong, bongos, and crystal glasses also embody James Bond’s adventures.

Shaken Not Stirred is a compilation of James Bond themes throughout the series. The piece is eight minutes long and divided into nine sections based off a selection of Bond films: “Dr. No Allegro,” “Moonraker Cha-Cha,” “Thunderball Vivace,” “Goldfinger Andantino,” “You Only Live Twice Allegretto,” “Moonracaker Adagissimo,” “Casino Royale Rumba,” “Diamonds Are Forever Vivo,” and “Never Say Never Adante.” Each section, varying in syncopation and tempo, maintains a common secret agent motif; the sections are often broken up by periods of silence or the performers saying “shaken not stirred.” With every addition of polyrhythmic layers, a dry martini with lemon peel is masterfully crafted.
