The 1st Artillery Regiment was one of four formed when the United States reorganized the United States Army's artillery from the Corps of Artillery to a regimental system. The regiment was formed on June 1, 1821 from companies of the Light Artillery Regiment and the 2nd and 4th battalion of the northern division of the Corps of Artillery:[1]: 54–55
