About The Signpost

The Signpost is the oldest online newspaper covering the Wikimedia movement, currently published twice a month. Since our launch in 2005, we have published 701 issues, comprising 5610 articles.

The original name of the newspaper was The Wikipedia Signpost; it was shortened to the The Signpost in August 2010 as a symbol of an expansion in scope beyond the English Wikipedia.

The Signpost is produced by volunteers editorially independent of the Wikimedia Foundation. Our mission and values guide our efforts. Editorial decisions are made by the editorial board, and we collaborate on our journalism in the open.

Unlike most Wikipedia pages, each Signpost article carries a byline to indicate its authors, and is edited by at least one other team member. We warmly welcome suggestions and submissions by anyone.

Mission

[edit]
  • Inform. We report on the issues that matter most in the Wikimedia movement, covering all relevant perspectives with fairness and empathy. We explain news and norms in plain language so that everyone can collaborate in disseminating free knowledge.
  • Entertain. We transcend the boundaries of article space to share excellent writing in a variety of formats, including interactive, opinion, narrative, satire, and original research content.
  • Publish. We are Wikimedia's best space to amplify ideas and spark curiosity. Reaching more than a million people throughout our nearly two decade history, we effectuate impact that far exceeds any other publication in the movement.

Values

[edit]
  • Public service. We work for the good of Wikimedia.
  • Transparency. We do journalism in the open, available for anyone to see.
  • Integrity. We are accountable to our work and are not afraid to admit our mistakes. We are fiercely independent.
