Timeline
[edit]- 1980 - terminated partnership with longtime business partner Gilles Raysse[1]
Collaborations
[edit]1993 - sells company
1999 - retires
After being approached by many brands to work with them, and realizing he wanted to stay active, Takada began collaborating with them over the years.[2]
2005 - Coca-Cola can design[3]
Style
[edit]Takada has said, "Fashion is not for the few —it is for all the people".[4]
- '"Kenzo substantiated his look very early on," says Iain R Webb, professor of fashion at Central Saint Martins. "His collections were all about fun, colour and drama, made out of remnants, from old finds. His eclecticism was very much in keeping with the ethnic style of the times and, for that reason, he was very popular among young people. French Elle embraced him very early on and that [magazine] really summed him up – he was youthful and joyous."'[5]
- Kenzo says, “I choose a theme and put all the clothes together, and it becomes folklore. It may be mad on the runway, but if you take each garment separately you'll see that they're all very quiet.”[6]
- Kenzo: "It’s thanks to the kimono that I found my identity [...] When I opened my boutique (in Paris) in 1970, I told myself, I’m Japanese, I probably know kimonos and Japanese traditions better than French designers and I should take advantage of that [...] Before that I followed Parisian trends. I hadn’t thought of the kimono in fashion."[7]
Legacy
[edit]- In 2024, former colleagues and friends helped unveil a memorial plaque commemorating Takada at the location of his first boutique[8]
