MASDIMA (Multi-Agent System for Disruption Management) is a research project currently under development at the University of Porto, Faculty of Engineering, LIACC/NIAD&R in Portugal. The idea in this research is to propose a distributed multi-agent system (distributed either in geographical term of the resources or in relation with finding solutions in a distributed way) that can find the best solution after a disruption has occurred. The solution will have to take into consideration several dimensions of the problem (in the case of the airline operations, flights/aircraft, crew and passengers) and find the best-integrated solution. An important characteristic will be the pro-active approach of the system in the sense that it will try to avoid similar problems in the future by learning from previous solutions and suggesting changes to be included in future schedules/plans. This research should is focused on the disruption management problem in a general context. The Airline Operations (AOC) will provide the environment to test our approach (taken from a real airline company information system). If information is available, other application domains like Air Traffic Control (ATC) and Autonomous Spacecraft Control (ASC) will be used to test our approach.
