John Joseph Albright (January 18, 1848– 1931) was an industrialist.
Early life and education
[edit]Albright was born on January 18, 1848 in Buchanan, Virginia. He graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy New York in 1868.
He became an operations supervisor in the Stanton PA coal industry.
In his first year of freight shipping he earned $100,000
He moved to Buffalo NY in 1883 and expanded his business into asphalt.
In 1883 he partner with T. Guilford Smith. The two men handled shipping coal for all the Philadelphia and Reading railroad company.
In 1899 he partnered with General Edmund Hayes to found the Lackawana Steel Company
Personal
He married Harriet Langdon in 1872. They had two children Raymond and Ruth. In 1895 Harriet Langdon died
In 1897 he married Susan Fuller. They had five children: John Joseph Junior (Jack), Elizabeth, Fuller, Susan, and Nancy.
Philanthropy In 1900 he donated $350,000 for the construction of the Albright-Knox art gallery. He hired E.B. Green as the architect
