My name is James Franklin. I graduated in chemistry from Cambridge University (UK) and then moved to the Université Libre de Bruxelles (Belgium), where I obtained a doctoral degree, with a thesis on the kinetics of gas-phase reactions involving chlorine atoms.

After a post-doctoral year studying ion-molecule reactions at the University of Alberta (Canada), I returned to Europe, where I worked for 34 years in the chemical industry, managing research activities and focusing mainly on organic chlorine and fluorine compounds, ranging from simple molecules to polymers. This included (a) development of processes for the manufacture of such chemicals; (b) research into their applications, with corresponding customer support; and (c) investigations into their environmental fate and impact. In the latter area, I have been a member of numerous international working groups over the last 20 years, dealing with such topics as ozone depletion, global warming, environmental persistence and distribution, long-range transport, atmospheric degradation mechanisms, etc.

Currently I am semi-retired, continuing to work part time as an environmental consultant.
