College career
[edit]Freshman season
[edit]Eastern Michigan's junior starting quarterback Tyler Benz was injured during the preseason, making Maxwell the starter for the first half of the season. He made his debut week 1 against Howard University. Maxwell lead Eastern Michigan to a 31–15 victory, completing 16-of-23 passes for 223 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. The following week against Penn State, Maxwell was benched in the fourth quarter after throwing his third interception of the game. Eastern Michigan would go on to loose 49–7.
In week 3, EMU traveled to Rutgers, where they upset the Scarlet Knights 21–20. The victory gave Eastern Michigan their second win of the season, matching their win total from a year before. Maxwell completed 15-of-20 passes for 229 yards and rushed for a game tying touchdown late in the first half.
