The Singles Chart is a weekly record chart based on single sales from Sunday to Saturday; during the 2000s, a total of 88 singles reached number one. The most successful artist of the 2000s was American singer-songwriter Madonna, who topped the Singles Chart for 39 weeks with seven different singles. "Umbrella" (2007) by Barbadian singer Rihanna and American rapper Jay-Z was the biggest-selling single of the decade; it spent 13 consecutive weeks at the top of the chart during the 2000s. The first number-one single of the decade was "Dov'è l'amore" by American singer and actress Cher. The final number one of the decade was "Meet Me Halfway" by American music group The Black Eyed Peas.

American singer-songwriter Madonna spent 39 weeks at the top of the Singles Chart with seven different releases during the 2000s, more than any other act. Her 2005 single "Hung Up" is also the sixth best-selling single of the decade.
"Umbrella" (2007) by Barbadian singer Rihanna and American rapper Jay-Z was the biggest-selling single of the decade; it spent 13 consecutive weeks at the top of the chart during the 2000s, longer than any other single and the longest spell at the top since 1999. "Umbrella" becoming and currently remains, the longest-running number one single of the 21st century to date. Rihanna also spent 25 weeks at the top spot with three releases, the second most.
American singer Lady Gaga scored the second best-selling single of the decade with "Poker Face" (2008), having spent 12 consecutive weeks at number one.
"All the Things She Said" (2002) by Russian music duo t.A.T.u. is the fourth biggest-selling single of the decade and the best-selling released by a group.
American musical group The Black Eyed Peas spent 22 weeks at the top of the Singles Chart during the 2000s, and also reached number one with four different releases, the most for a group and the second overall. Their 2009 single "I Gotta Feeling" is also the 20th best-selling single of the decade.
American singer Beyoncé spent 20 weeks at the top during the decade, and also reached number one with four different releases, the second most.
"The Ketchup Song (Asereje)" by Spanish girl group Las Ketchup is the fifth best-selling and the best-selling non-English language song of the decade.
