Marina Helena Cunha Pereira Santos (Brasília, September 10, 1980) is a Brazilian economist and politician. She was associated with Minister Paulo Guedes and served as Director of Privatization during the Jair Bolsonaro administration. In 2024, she ran for Mayor of São Paulo as a candidate for the Novo party.[3][4][5][6][7]
Biography
[edit]She was born on September 10, 1980, in Brasília, the daughter of Sérgio Cutolo dos Santos and Maria Lais da Cunha Pereira. At the age of three, she moved with her mother to the outskirts of São Luís do Maranhão after her parents' divorce. A victim of abuse at 13, she ran away from her mother's home to live with her father in Brasília, the federal capital. Her father, a public servant who transitioned to the private sector, ensured she attended good schools during her teenage years. She graduated in economics from the University of Brasília, where she also completed her master's degree in the same field. At 24, she moved to São Paulo, where she began her professional career.
In 2020, she was the running mate of Filipe Sabará in the São Paulo mayoral campaign. However, she withdrew from the race after the candidate was expelled from the party, who at the time claimed to be persecuted by João Amoedo, one of the party's founders. As a result, the Novo Party requested the removal of both names from the ballots.
In 2022, she ran for federal deputy, declaring assets worth R$ 8.6 million to the Electoral Court. She attracted attention and donations from major financial market investors, receiving 50,073 votes for the Novo Party, of which she was a national leader and is currently the first alternate for the party’s seat in the state of São Paulo. During the campaign, she reported to the police that she was the target of cyberattacks by bots on her Instagram account. She was also the economist for presidential candidate Felipe d'Avila that same year. Throughout her professional and political career, Marina led the Special Secretariat for Privatization and Divestment, at the invitation of Minister Paulo Guedes during President Jair Bolsonaro’s administration, and was responsible for coordinating the development of a government plan for the city of São Paulo in 2020. Marina was also the CEO of the Millenium Institute and the founder of the Brasil Sem Privilégios movement. She worked for 20 years in the financial market, with experience in various institutions such as Itaú, Bradesco, and Bozano Investimentos.
São Paulo Mayoral Campaign in 2024
[edit]In January 2024, Marina made national headlines and was the target of criticism and attacks on social media after she played a speech by Javier Milei for her unborn son Theo while she was pregnant. The pre-candidate claimed that these were attacks orchestrated by the left.
In March 2024, her high approval ratings in Datafolha polls were attributed by some experts, including Luciana Chong, Datafolha's director, to a possible confusion with the name of politician Marina Silva. Marina Helena denied this claim.
On April 24, she stirred controversy by posting a photo wearing a t-shirt calling for the impeachment of Supreme Federal Court (STF) Justice Alexandre de Moraes.
During the TV Cultura debate for the São Paulo mayoral race, candidate José Luiz Datena used Marina Helena's chair to physically attack Pablo Marçal. Marina Helena expressed her indignation over the incident. In the SBT debate, Marina adopted a more assertive stance. However, she did not participate in the TV Globo debate for the 2024 São Paulo mayoral race due to a rule requiring at least five members of Congress for the invitation to be mandatory. Although the Novo party had five congressmen, Deputy Ricardo Salles was deemed ineligible due to joining the party after the stipulated deadline. Consequently, the invitation to the candidate became optional, and she was excluded from the debate, which Marina Helena criticized as "censorship" on her social media.
At the end of the first round of vote counting, the candidate received 84,212 valid votes, 1.38% of the total, finishing 6th and missing the second round. After her defeat, Marina declared her vote and support for Ricardo Nunes in the runoff.
Wikipédia
[edit]In April 2024, Marina Helena's page was deleted from the Portuguese Wikipedia. On the 23rd, the Novo Party claimed that the deletion of the page was an act of censorship and boycott against the pre-candidate. Wikipedia editors stated that the page was removed due to a lack of demonstrated significance and for being used as propaganda during an election year. The article was deleted following a vote through the consensus deletion process.
