ORF 1 HD is the fourth TV station broadcast by the ORF. The program is equivalent to the program of ORF1, with the difference, that it is broadcast in high definition. Therefore, ORF1 is the first german-language TV station that sends a HD version parallel to its SD channel.

Beginnings

[edit]

On 23. January 2008, the ORF first broadcasted live in HD from the ski race called The Nightrace in Schladming. A special HDTV event, introducing the HD technology, was scheduled in all regional ORF stations after that. The technology partner for HD productions is the Telekom Austria.[1]

In anticipation of the EURO 2008, the ORF first launched the channel ORF1 HD in May 2008 and so started a regular channel in high definition. Since not many ORF-made shows and movies are available in high definition, many standard definition programs are scaled up to reach the 720p quality.

Receiving

[edit]

ORF 1 HD can be received on Astra 19,2 degrees east, frequency 10,832 GHz horizontal (SR 22000, FEC 5/6). Test operations were started on May 1st. 10 days later, ORF1 HD was receivable for those households, who own an ORF or Premiere card. Those who could receive ORF1 HD, would see a trailer, showing sport, film and documentation highlights.[2]

The official start for ORF1 HD was the 2. June 2008, just a few days before the start of the EURO 2008. Since then, the program of ORF1 gets broadcasted in high definition.

Programming

[edit]

Against the first expectations, to regularly see sporting events in HD after the EURO 2008, is limited to HD a few U.S. TV shows, such as CSI Miami, Dr. House, Grey's Anatomy or Desperate Housewives. (Desperate Housewives and Grey's Anatomy get's broadcasted in English and German.) Also, most sunday evening movies get broadcast in full HD.
