Jayen Varma (born February 3, 1961) is an electric bass player. His background in Indian classical percusion instrument mridangam, facilitated him to apply tabla/mridangam style finger slap on the bass guitar. According to the Registry of Official World Records (Record Holders Republic) USA and UK, he is the fastest bassist, playing 36 percussive notes per second.[1]. Instead of using the usual slap bass technique, Jayen plays his 5-string bass like a tabla, which made him notable in the international arena.
Genre
[edit]He is in to RagaZZ music. Ragazz is a new genre of Music with a mix of Raga and Jazz.
Inspiration
[edit]His inspiration has been the following message of Sage Pathanjali (compiler of the Yoga Sutras), traslated by Dr.Wayne Dyer in his book 'The Power of Intention'.
“……….When you are inspired by some great purpose or some extraordinary project, all your thoughts break their bonds, your mind transcends limitations, your consciousness expands in every direction…. and you find yourself in a new, great and wonderful world…… dormant forces, faculties and talents come alive... and you discover yourself to be a greater person, by far, than you ever dreamed yourself to be……….”.
Influence
[edit]His influence has been Shadkala Govinda Marar (AD 1798-1843), who is considered as one of the Fastest Carnatic Singers ever lived in India. He was also adept in playing percussion instruments like Mridangam, Chenda, Edakka and Thimila in any odd timing. His expertise in singing in sixth degrees of speed (around 32 notes per second) earned him the title ShadKaala (shadkaala= 32nd notes; Demi Semi Quaver)
