The 1973–74 season was Manchester City F.C.'s eighty-second season of league football, and eighth consecutive season in the Football League First Division. This season is also considered to be the ninth season of the glory era of Manchester City, which started at the appointment of the managerial partnership of Joe Mercer and Malcolm Allison in 1965.
This season is also well-known for the final game of the season, played against rivals Manchester United. With United struggling, a loss at Old Trafford looked set to relegate them, and indeed this proved so when former United legend Denis Law scored with a back-heel for the only goal of the game. Results elsewhere eventually would show that United would have been relegated with a draw also, but for the irony of their legendary player defeating them, the goal is reknowned by City fans as the back-heel which relegated United.
