SIGNAL (make into another page)
[edit]SIGNAL is a method using macroinvertebrates to assess water quality from a particular waterbody or stream, with the macroinvertebrates used as bioindicators.
SIGNAL stands for "Stream Invertebrate Grade Number -Average Level" [1] : that is, families of macroinvertbrates have had their sensitivity to water quality assesed and given a score. By examining the macroinvertebrates present the water body or stream can be given a numerical score indicating water quality. Alternatively, there is a version designed for identification that is only taken to the phylum level.
The SIGNAL system has been developed in Australia, hence may not be suitable for other continents. Average Australian water ionic composition is quite different form "world average freshwater" composition Cite error: A <ref>

(see the help page)..
(Identification can be taken to either the taxonomic level of family, or alternativley for less expereinced samplers, to either the order, class or phylum (depending on the macroinvertebrate type)[1]. )
