Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed
Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed joined as the Governor of the Bangladesh Bank (Central Bank) on 02 May, 2005 and completed his four year tenure on 30 April 2009. Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed was the Managing Director of Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation (PKSF), the apex funding agency of microcredit operations in Bangladesh. He played a major role in developing the microcredit operations of the microfinance institutions (MFIs) in Bangladesh.
Dr. Ahmed obtained his Ph.D. in Economics from McMaster University, Canada in 1978. He started his career as a teacher in Economics at Dhaka University and then joined the civil service of the government in the erstwhile Civil Service of Pakistan (CSP) cadre. He served in various capacities in field of administration in the Government of Bangladesh. He worked as Assistant Commissioner, Dhaka district and also Sub-divisional Officer(SDO)of the then Pirojpur sub-division(now district) He worked at the Centre on Integrated Rural Development for Asia and the Pacific (CIRDAP), a regional inter-governmental organizations with its headquarter in Dhaka. He was the Director General of Bangladesh Academy for Rural Development (BARD) Comilla.
Dr. Ahmed has contributed in various fields of rural development and poverty alleviation based on his experiences of various countries of the world. He also worked as the Director General of the NGO Affairs Bureau under the Office of the Prime Minister. In this job he was instrumental in promoting the role of NGOs in socio-economic development of Bangladesh. As the Governor of the central bank, he was responsible for formulating monetary policy and its implementation as well as regulating the banks and financial institutions..He has authored more than 60 books, reports and journal articles which have been published at home and abroad. He has worked as a Consultant for international agencies like ADB, APDC, ESCAP, FAO, ILO, UNCRD, UNDP, UNESCO and the World Bank. He is on advisory bodies of several government and non-government agencies in Bangladesh. He has extensively traveled in many countries of the world. As a part-time faculty member, he taught at the Masters’ level at the North South University and the Dhaka University in the year 2009. From January 2010, to 18 January 2014 he was Professor, School of Business, North South University, Dhaka, Bangladesh and from 26 January 2014 he is Professor in the Business School, BRAC University, Dhaka, Bangladesh.
