The Indonesia national football team (Indonesia: Tim Nasional Sepak Bola Indonesia ) is considered to be the feeder team for the Indonesia national football team, represents Indonesia at football in the Olympic Games, Asian Games and Southeast Asian Games, as well as any other under-23 international football tournaments including the AFC U-23 Asian Cup. It is controlled by the Football Association of Indonesia.
This team was founded when the Olympic football was changed to competition, and is also managed as Senior team while it doesn't play in major competitions.
Competition History
[edit]Southeast Asian Games
[edit]The Indonesian football team was absent from the SEA Games competition from the year 1929 up to the year 1975.[2]
In 2001, the competition changed the rules to make it only for those under the age of 23 to be able to join and compete in the SEA Games football competition.[3]
The 2011 SEA Games, which was held in Indonesia, marked the first time the under-23 Indonesian football team reached the finals.[4] The under-23 Indonesian football team gathered three wins against Cambodia , Singapore, and Thailand before facing Malaysia in the final. The under-23 Indonesian football team went to a penalty shootout against Malaysia's football team in the final, where the Indonesian football team suffered a loss with an aggregate score of 5-4.[4]
The 2013 SEA Games held in Myanmar became the second time the under-23 Indonesian football team has reached the finals. Having a rough start in the competition, they reached the semi-final as their group's runner-up, where they beat Malaysia's football team in penalties.[5] The under-23 Indonesian football team faced Thailand's football team in the final, where they suffered a 1-0 loss.[6]
The competition then changed the rule again in 2017, where only those under the age of 22 would be able to join and compete; however, in the 2023 SEA Games, the competition changed the rules again to allow those under the age of 23 to be able to compete.[2]
The 2019 SEA Games held in Vietnam became the last time prior to the 2023 SEA Games that the Under-22 Indonesian football team reached the finals.[6] The under-22 Indonesian football team came face to face with the competition host in the final, Vietnam, where the Indonesian football team suffered a 3-0 to get a silver medal.[7]
The 2023 SEA Games held in Cambodia marks the first time the under-23 Indonesian football team won the competition, and it is the third time in their history that they have gained the gold medal.[8] The under-23 Indonesian football team managed to beat Vietnam's football team in the semi-final with a score of 3-2 with ten men down. In the final, Indonesia again faced Thailand's national football team, where they managed to win with a score of 5-2, gaining their third gold medal since 1991.[8] [9]
Throughout the competition from 2001 to 2023 in the SEA Games, the Indonesian under-23 national team's best overall placement was first place, where they beat Thailand's team in the final with a score of 5-2, where the game was played until the 120th minute. The victory over Thailand in the 2023 SEA Games at Cambodia marked Indonesia's national football team's third gold medal since 1991.
AFF Under 23 Championship
[edit]The AFF U-23 Championship competition started in 2005 with eight countries participating, including Myanmar, Malaysia, Filipina, Timor Leste, Thailand, Singapore, Laos, and Cambodia. During this time, Indonesia's national under-23 football team did not participate in the competition.[10] The competition served as a pre-tournament to the SEA Games competition, which is held next. After the AFF U-23 Championship in 2005, The competition was supposed to be held in Indonesia in 2011, however, due to Gelora Sriwijaya stadium still being under renovation, the competition was cancelled. [11] The competition then experienced a hiatus of over 14 years, where the next competition was born in 2019.[10]
The 2019 AFF U-23 Championship was held in Cambodia, with eight countries participating, including Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Filipina, Thailand, Timor Leste, and Vietnam.[10] The under-23 Indonesian football team was placed in group B alongside Cambodia, Myanmar, and Malaysia.Cite error: The <ref>

In their second game against Malaysia, the Indonesian football team suffered another tie with the score of 2-2. In their last group game, Indonesia faced off with the host Cambodia, where the under-23 Indonesian football team won with a score of 2-0 to send them to the semi-final.Cite error: The <ref>

Indonesia came face to face with Vietnam in the semi-final, where they won with a score of 1-0, with a free kick in the 70th minute to bring them to the final.Cite error: The <ref>

Since then, the competition has been held two more times, in the years 2022 and 2023. However, the under-23 Indonesian football team did not participate in the 2022 AFF U-23 Championship due to the COVID-19 pandemic, where several players tested positive. Furthermore, several players suffered injuries, leading the Indonesian football team to resign from the competition.[13]
The 2023 AFF U-23 Championship held in Bangkok, Thailand marked the second time the under-23 Indonesian football team has reached the final again. However, the Indonesian football team lost to Vietnam in a penalty shootout with an aggregate score of 5-6 to Vietnam.[10]
AFC Under-23 Asian Cup
[edit]The 2024 AFC U-23 Asian Cup hosted by the Asian Football Confederation will mark the sixth time the competition will be held for this age group, and the competition itself will serve as a qualifier round for the 2024 Olympics.[14]
Prior to entering the AFC U-23 Asian Cup, the under-23 Indonesian football team had to go through the group qualifier round. The Indonesian football team was placed in Group K, alongside Taiwan and Turkmenistan.[15]
In their first qualifier match, the under-23 Indonesian football team faced off against Taiwan and won with a score of 9-0. In their second match, Indonesia faced off against Turkmenistan, where they won another game with a score of 2-0.[16] The under-23 Indonesian football team finishes off at the top of their group with two wins, which sealed their place to go to the next round. For the first time in their history, under the direction of Shin Tae-Yong, the under-23 Indonesian football team Indonesia has qualified to enter the AFC U-23 Asian Cup Qatar 2024.[16]
The 2024 AFC U-23 Asian Cup will consist of over 16 teams, including the Indonesian football team, and the competition will be played in Qatar from April 15th to May 3rd of 2024.[14]
Asian Games
[edit]The first time the under-23 Indonesian national football team participated was in the 2006 Asian Games, where they were disqualified in the group stage. The team was placed in group B alongside Syria, Singapore, and Iraq. The Indonesian under-23 football team suffered a 4-1 loss in their opening game against Syria. Following their defeat against Syria, the Indonesian football team only managed to gather one draw and suffered an additional loss to send them home.[17]
The 2014 Asian Games in South Korea marked the second time the under-23 Indonesian football team participated in the competition. They were placed in group E alongside Thailand, Maldives, and East Timor. The Indonesian football team won two games against Maldives and East Timor but suffered a defeat against Thailand and finished as runner-up of the group. The Indonesian football team continued to the round of 16, where they were disqualified after suffering a loss against North Korea.[17]
The Indonesian under-23 national football team would then participate two more times during the 2018 and the recent 2023 (2022) Asian Games, where they were knocked out in the round of 16 against Uzbekistan.[18]
Kit
[edit]The kits used usually follow the senior team's kits. However, they sometimes used kits with different manufacturers. In 2006 Asian Games, they used Puma kits. For the 2018 Asian Games, 2021 Southeast Asian Games, 2022 Asian Games, and 2023 Southeast Asian Games, they will use Li-Ning kits after the Indonesian Olympic Committee reached full sponsorship agreement with the apparel. Li-Ning will manufacture all clothes used by all Indonesian athletes.[19]
