Thampan (Honorary title)
The Syrian Christians of Kerala, also known as Saint Thomas Christians, are a historically influential community in southern India, tracing their roots to the 1st century AD with the evangelization of St. Thomas the Apostle. Over the centuries, they primarily engaged in trade and business, with less frequent involvement in warfare or administration.
The title "Thampan" was an honorary designation granted to the Kunnumpurath Varghese Thoma (Kaduva Kunnel Varghese) family of Kottayam by the Chembakassery Raja. This title, along with the appointment as vassals over a large area in present-day Karthikappally, was awarded in recognition of the family's significant support to the ruler, particularly for their warrior prowess.
Similar honorary titles such as "Thampan," "Tharakan," and "Panicker" were often bestowed upon Saint Thomas Christians by local kings, acknowledging their talents and contributions to society.
