Jali Ltd
Jali Ltd is a British manufacturing company that specialises in made-to-measure furniture.
History
[edit]Jali was founded in 1989 by Nicholas Showan. Initially the company sold exclusively radiator cabinets and these were manufactured using CNC routers.
Philosophy
[edit]The company ideal is that a consumer should not necessarily be forced to choose between several off-the-shelf products, and instead should be able to define for him- or herself the exact product they would like. Use of sophisticated technology in the design and manufacture stage can translate to greater choice and less cost on the side of the consumer.
The company uses advanced technology to enable otherwise very costly products to be manufactured easily. Jali's production process has more in common with automobile manufacture than it does with that of other furniture companies[1]. Extensive use is made of pull production and CAD/CAM. Within the company, the management employs ideas such as flat management and kaizen.
Jali attempts to reduce its carbon footprint as much as possible, both for reasons of financial efficiency and out of a sense of global ethics. It does this using technologies and approaches such as waste reduction.
Media Coverage and Recognition
[edit]Jali has been in the media for both its products and its processes. Both Jali and Nicholas Showan have won awards in the fields of manufacture (Manufacturing Excellence), e-commerce (Retail Systems Awards 2008, E-Commerce), business (KM Group Small Business of the Year, Kent Business Awards, Small Business of the South-East), and technological innovation (DTI Smart Award).
