Vera Gulikers (Meerssen, 1991)[1] is a Dutch visual artist. She paints and makes sculptures. A recurring topic in her works is the relation between the art of painting and every day and stereotypical female acts and traditions.[2] Furthermore, her work comments on the position of women in art history.

Gulikers frequently uses pastel colours in work.[3] She has described her colour scheme as an ironic comment on and an appropriation of the socially constructed stereotypes associated with these colours, such as cuteness and harmlessness.[2]

Gulikers often uses home made egg tempera paint. She got the idea for her praised work 'Poetsdoek' (cleaning cloth) when she accidentally kicked a bucket with egg tempera and swept up the paint.[4] This also played into Guliker's interest in the theme of housekeeping as a creative process.[4]

Biography

[edit]

Gulikers graduated from the Maastricht Institute of Arts (Bachelor Fine Art) in 2014, after which she continued her studies at Sint Lucas in Antwerp (Master Fine Art, 2016). From 2017 until 2019, she joined the post-academic Jan van Eyck Academy in Maastricht as a participant.[5] Later, she was a resident in Schloss Balmoral (2019-2020).[6]

The exhibition 'If then is now', displayed a series of wall paintings on women in art and music history in the music school of Schunck.[7]

Works of Guliker's are included in the following collections:[8]

  • Akzo Nobel Art Foundation

[edit]

In 2017, Gulikers won the Koninklijke Prijs voor de Vrije Schilderkunst (Royal Prize for the Free Art of Painting).[5] In 2019 she won the prize Best Verzorgde Boeken (Best Well-cared for Books)[9] at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. In 2020, she was one of six winners of the Buning Brongers Awards at Arti et Amicitiae, Amsterdam.[10]
