Belgium held a national final to select the song that would represent the country at the Eurovision Song Contest 1957. The winner was the song "Straatdeuntje". Bobbejaan Schoepen was chosen in an internal selection as the artist.
Before Eurovision
[edit]Belgium was represented by the Flemish broadcaster NIR in the Eurovision Song Contest 1957.[1][2] The participating broadcaster NIR used an internal selection to choose Bobbejaan Schoepen as its artist.[1] Schoepen was contacted by telegram by NIR in 1956 while being on tour in the United States.[3] NIR announced its decision in late January 1957.[4][5]
Format and competing entries
[edit]In order to select a song, NIR asked seven composers to write one song each, with each composer choosing freely their lyricist.[1] From these seven submitted songs, a ten-member-jury first chose three songs which were to compete in a national final.[1][2] The jury was appointed by Jan Boon , director general of NIR.[3] It consisted of Nic Bal , Francis Bay, Robert Bosmans (Charles Bens), Bob Boon , Léonce Gras , Jack Kluger, Albert Rollewagen, Paul Van Dessel and Renaat Verbruggen , with Marcel Poot acting as jury president.[1] Since Schoepen was still in the United States, the jury based its first selection upon recordings of the songs with other artists, such as Rina Pia for "De jodelende koe."[3] It is not known which artists recorded the three finalist songs but according to André Vermeulen, "Straatdeuntje" was possibly sung by Jean Walter , "Zomernacht in 'Gay Paree'" possibly by Eric Franssen, and one of the three songs was sung by Terry Lester.[3]

De TV maakt muziek
[edit]De TV maakt muziek was a monthly program on Belgian Television with light music and dance performances.[5][6] It was broadcast from the Sonart studio in Brussels.[6][7] The edition of 19 February 1957 served as the national final.[7] It was broadcast on 20:45 CET (19:45 UTC) on NIR and also in the Netherlands on NTS, with a duration of 45 minutes.[5][7][8] De TV maakt muziek was produced by Paul Van Dessel and directed by Charles Kerremans.[8]
During the program, Bobbejaan Schoepen performed the three finalist songs.[9] In addition, the four non finalist songs were also performed, in this case by the original artists.[3]
It was planned that both the jury and members of the general public should be able to vote in order to decide Belgium's entry.[1] Initial plans foresaw public voting taking place in several cities, among them Brussels and Antwerp.[2] NIR later dropped the idea of the audience having their say, announcing that the jury alone was entirely representative.[3]
The jury was composed by the same 10-member panel as for the selection of the entries of the national final, with Gerd Mertens voting instead of either Robert Bosmans or jury president Marcel Poot.[a][3] Every jury member gave one point to their favourite song, two points to the second favorite and three points to their least favourite song so that the winner was the song with the lowest total score.[3] "Straatdeuntje"[b], written by Harry Frekin with lyrics by Eric Franssen, came first with 16 points and was selected by the jury as the Belgian entry.[3][11][13] "Zomernacht in 'Gay Paree'" reached 2nd place with 21 points, and "Het beeld van mijn moeder" placed 3rd with 23 points.
De TV maakt muziek was praised by TV magazine De TV-kijker for its set design by Jean Marlier, which included an authentic watermill with running water, an autumn landscape and a large telephone switchboard.[6][14] It also called the show "one of the best presented programs on Belgian television."[6]

Notes
[edit]- ^ Just before the show, continuity announcer Terry Van Ginderen reads out the list of the jury members, giving eleven names, with Robert Bosmans alongside Gerd Mertens, and Marcel Poot as eleventh member and jury president.[10] However, according to André Vermeulen, Gerd Mertens replaced Robert Bosmans for the voting in the national final.[3] In any case, the final result was based on votes from ten jurors.[3]
- ^ The title of the song also appears as "Langs de straten danst er een deuntje" in Belgian press reports ahead of the contest[11][12][13]
