Shira Nayman (born April 26, 1960) is a novelist and short story writer. Nayman is the author of a short story collection, Awake in the Dark and a novel The Listener, as well as many nonfiction and fiction pieces that have appeared in The Atlantic, The Georgia Review, and others. Nayman lives in Brooklyn, New York with her husband and two children.

Early Life

Born in South Africa, Nayman moved at a young age to Melbourne, Australia. In Melbourne, Nayman's community consisted of a number of Holocaust survivors. This community plus her family's own experience fleeing the pogroms in Eastern Europe would inspire Awake in the Dark.

Education

Nayman graduated with honors from Melbourne's Monash University with a Bachelor of Science degree in physiology and psychology. After graduation, she spent a year at Hebrew University in Jerusalem studying literature and history. Nayman then moved to the United States where she received her doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Rutgers University. After completing a two-year post-doctoral fellowship in psychology at New York Hospital-Cornell University Medical Center in Westchester, she received a merit scholarship to study English and Comparative Literature at Columbia University in New York, earning her masters degree in 1990.

Career

In addition to writing fiction for the last fifteen years, Nayman has taught in the psychology department at Rutgers University and in the department of English and Comparative Literature for Columbia University. Nayman has also built a career as a marketing and brand consultant. Her clients have included such corporations as Hershey, AOL, and Microsoft.
