A tradition of issuing medals to mark the independence of former British Colonies can be traced back to the issuance of the Union of South Africa Commemoration Medal. It may be considered the first of many independence medals issued throughout the commonwealth.[1] Starting with the partition of British India into India and Pakistan, Independence Medals have been consistently issued to commemorate the events. Civilian and military personnel are customarily awarded these medals for their participation in working toward independence and participation in independence ceremonies.[2]
