Rainbows End Wikipedia Project

1. Objective I propose to help create and edit a wikipedia entry dealing with the sociological implications of advanced technology in Rainbows End, mainly those dealing with wearable computers and medical technology.
2. Interest This is interesting because it could help current developers of these technologies, and those interested in pursuing that kind of career, understand the implications of their work and one of the possible futures should they be successful in creating the kind of technology available to the characters in Rainbows End.
3. Background reading I will read wikipedia, text book and other basic sociology texts on the following topics: past notable developments in medical technology, such as the discovery of penicillin, and articles on current "wearable" technology- shirts such as the "hug shirt" that I mentioned to Dr. Welser in class one day, and certain shirts on Thinkgeek.com that respond to wifi signals and radio signals.
   1. I will also find scholarly research on the general issue of community resistance to the introduction of new technologies.
   2. I will use Google, MSNBC, and other news media outlets to find examples of this kind of resistance.
4. General Plan I plan to research and take detailed notes, including links to online documents where available. I will then write up an article, to be posted, that includes subsections on current medical advances and resistance to technology.
5. Collaborators I will be working alone, unless there is someone interested in this same subset of themes in Rainbows End.
