Species of Spaces and Other Pieces(French: W ou le souvenir d'enfance), is a semi-autobiographical series of essays by French author Georges Perec, focussed on the title piece, which observes the different spaces that Perec inhabits or visits in his life and their relationship to him.[1]
Structure
[edit]The book is split into a series of essays that observe different sections of Perec's life in different formats. The first half of the book features the title essay, Species of Spaces, in which Perec explores different types of spaces that he interacts with or inhabits, beginning with the minute ("The Page") and ending with the infinitely expansive ("Space"). This is followed by a series of short articles and an interview with Perec.
Perec describes the subject of the book in its introduction as "not the void exactly, but rather what there is round about or inside it."
Species of Spaces (Essay)
[edit]Species of Spaces begins with Perec exploring the space of the page and the various ways that he can fill it. This gradually expands in scale until he describes rooms, towns, the earth and eventually space itself.
