Saint Noël Pinot, born in Angers, the 19 of december, 1747, died martyred in Angers, February 21, 1794), sometimes called by his Latin name, Natalis Pinot, or often even Nael. Noel Pinot was a Catholic Priest, and Martyr at the hands of the French Revolution.
Born in Angers to a clothmaker, Noel was one of 16 children.
Noel was ordained a Priest December 22, 1770. He was first named Vicar at Bousse, then Procurator in 1772, and later chapelain of the "incurables", the incurables, in Angers, in 1781. In September 1788, we was named Curate of Louroux-Béconnais.
During the course of the Revolution, he refused to take the oath of the Civil Constitution of the Clergy, and pursued his Ministry despite the manifest risks.
Tracked as a clandestine Priest, he was arrested the night of February 8, 1794, during a Mass he was celebrating in secret, in a stable in Louroux-Béconnais. He was brought to Angers, appeared before a Revolutionary Tribunal, and was guillotined February 21, 1794 (3 ventôse, An II), at the main square, the "Place du Ralliement".
As a mockery of his Priesthood, he was vested with the chasuble and other liturgical vestments proper of his State, and paraded up scaffold, in mockery of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.
He mounted the scaffold reciting the first prayers of the Mass, "Introibo ad Altare Dei", "I shall go onto the altar of God, to the God who giveth Joy to my Youth".
A statue in the Cathedral of Angers represents him climing the first step of the "Altar of God".
Beatified by Pius XI, October 31, 1926, Noel Pinot was Canonized and raised to the Honour of the Altars by John Paul II February 19, 1984. His feast day in the new liturgical calendar is the 21st day of February.
