Donna Maria Carmela Attolico, Countess di Adelfia, born (15 December 1930) in Moscow, is the daughter of Count Bernardo Attolico di Adelfia, Ambassador of Italy to the Soviet Union, from 1930 to 1935, and to Germany from 1935 until 1940, around the time of the beginning of World War II, and of Eleonora of the Counts Pietromarchi, di Velletri.

In 1955 she married[1] the heir to the WH Smith estate, William Smith, with whom she had five children, including the current Viscount Hambleden, Henry Smith. She performs many philanthropic roles and charitable activities. Her stately home of Hambleden has been used for fundraising events benefiting many charities, including the NSPCC. Her home has also been the set of several film productions, including Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Dance with a Stranger and 101 Dalmatians.
